Dollar General coupon policy

Updated Nov 8, 2026. Policy details checked against Dollar General's own pages on Nov 7, 2026.

Dollar General’s coupon policy accepts manufacturer coupons and Dollar General store coupons, on paper, as valid print-at-home coupons, or as DG digital coupons, with a limit of two coupons per item. The policy page we checked on Nov 7, 2026 is marked “Updated 4/2018” and is still the live policy on dollargeneral.com.

Does Dollar General take coupons?

Yes. The policy says: “At Dollar General, we are pleased to accept both Manufacturers’ Coupons and Dollar General Store Coupons at any of our retail store locations.” Those can be “original paper coupons, valid print-at-home coupons, and/or Dollar General Digital Coupons.”

Which coupons Dollar General accepts

A coupon must meet all of these, quoted from the policy:

  • “Must be original. Photocopies are not accepted.”
  • “Must have a scannable barcode or a valid Dollar General promotion code that can be scanned by a DG store associate”
  • “Must have a visible and a valid expiration date”
  • “Can be redeemed only for items sold at Dollar General, and can be redeemed only for the exact same item (package weight, size, etc.) unless otherwise specified”
  • “Limit of 5 identical coupons per household per day, if no limit specified on coupon”
  • “Coupons for free items are only accepted if a purchase is required to get one free.”

Coupons Dollar General will not accept

The policy lists these as not accepted:

  • Coupons from other retailers
  • Expired coupons
  • Photocopies, screenshots or pictures of any kind
  • Internet coupons without a scannable barcode, a Dollar General promotion code, or a visible and valid expiration date
  • Coupons for “free” items with no purchase requirement (buy one get one free is acceptable)
  • Manufacturer coupons without a “remit to:” address

Can you stack coupons at Dollar General?

Yes, two per item at most. The policy says: “A maximum of two coupons will be allowed per item. To do this, one coupon must be a Manufacturer Coupon and the second coupon must be a Dollar General Coupon.”

Three details decide whether a stack works:

  • “Stacking of 2 or more Manufacturer Coupons per item is not allowed.”
  • “Unless labeled a DG Store Coupon in the Digital Coupon Gallery, DG Digital Coupons are Manufacturer Coupons.” So most digital coupons cannot be paired with a paper manufacturer coupon.
  • “If there is a conflict between a DG Digital Coupon and a Paper Coupon for the same item, the first one applied will be counted toward the transaction and the other will not, regardless of value.”

Stacking two or more Dollar General coupons in one transaction “is allowed unless otherwise noted on the coupon or associated promotional art.”

What happens when a coupon is worth more than the item

The extra goes to the rest of your order, never to cash. “If a coupon value is more than the price of the item, the remaining value will be applied to the balance of the transaction.” Overages cannot be applied to “gift cards, pre-paid money cards, phone cards, alcohol, or tobacco,” and “Cash back will not be given.”

Other rules in the Dollar General coupon policy

  • “Dollar General does not match competitor Ad prices.”
  • “Dollar General does not double or multiply the value of coupons.”
  • “Transactions cannot be broken up to avoid coupon stacking restrictions.”
  • “Only one Dollar General Digital Coupon Account per person.”
  • “All coupon offers available only while quantities last.”

Dollar General also reserves the right to limit purchase quantities “to typical retail purchase quantities and to exclude resellers/dealers,” to refuse coupons over a certain dollar amount, and to “Remove any coupon or offer for any reason.”

Using the policy with this week’s ad

The Dollar General weekly ad marks deals whose price includes a DG digital coupon. How to clip and redeem those is in Dollar General digital coupons, and how to combine everything on one trip is in Dollar General couponing.
